Modify data in fields

Is it possible to have some fields locked so that only certain people can make changes to the field or modify it? For example - we have assets with serial numbers and we want to have it so that only the administrator can modify this field or change the serial number.

In an office with 10+ employees we need the ability to define who can change data contained in certain fields and who can't.

This is becoming a very important issue in order to maintain the integrity of the database.
