What is the difference between the asset code and asset name?

What is the difference between these two? Do I need to use both always?

Re: What is the difference between the asset code and asset name?

The main differences are that the Asset Name is a mandatory field, and each Asset must have an Asset Name, which can be any name you wish. You can have many assets with the same name.

The Asset Code on the other hand is not a mandatory field. You can leave it empty. However, when it is used its value must be unique. In other words, you cannot have two assets with the same asset code (but you can have as many assets as you want with no code).

This helps when you have the same type of Asset (e.g. "HP Workstation Z50"), but you wish to differentiate between the different Assets using a unique Asset Code (e.g. "HP-Z50-001", "HP-Z50-002", etc.). When you wish to select the Asset from the drop-down list (such as when selecting an Asset for a new Ticket), you will be displayed with both the Name and the Code, which helps you easily find the exact Asset you need.
