if you already have an opportunity and already have a ticket can you link them or do you have to delete the ticket and within the opportunity create new ticket?

You could create a new Ticket from the Opportunity then merge it with the existing Ticket using Tools > Data Tools > Ticket Merge
Alternatively you could just add a Note or History Note to the Ticket referring to the Opportunity or vice versa.
