The Web Interface for Customers allows viewing the available documents and sort by subject. The "Type" is actually the file type (e.g. doc, pdf), and is determined by the file itself so it cannot be used for sorting purposes within the application. As for category - this field is not displayed for customers, only for employees, and in the employees interface it does allow you to sort by it.

I hope this makes more sense now.
