Getting Started > Software Installation

Introduction

Installing RangerMSP is easy! The program can be placed on your server, allowing multiple users to access the program from separate PCs, OR it can be installed as a stand-alone application on a single PC.

Download

Make sure you have downloaded the latest RangerMSP setup file from the RangerMSP download page. Note that this file contains everything needed to install the main RangerMSP application and all RangerMSP modules.

Installation

Decide how you want to install RangerMSP: (Please choose only 1 method)

Note: The installation file already includes all of RangerMSP's modules. In order to set up server-side modules such as the RangerMSP Web Interface, RangerMSP Email Connector, and RangerMSP Alerts Server refer to their manual.

Network Installation

This section provides information on how to install RangerMSP for network usage. Installation is short and simple, and you can be up and running in minutes.

Where should the RangerMSP software be located when using RangerMSP on the network?
RangerMSP should be installed in a shared folder on your server that is accessible to all users who work with the application. All client applications will be launched from this shared folder. There is no need to install the full RangerMSP system on each client PC.

Server-side Installation

The RangerMSP installation process is completed in a few simple steps:

  1. Download — Make sure you have downloaded the latest RangerMSP setup file from the RangerMSP download page.
  2. Create a shared folder — Create a shared folder on the server, or on any computer that acts as a server and can be accessed over the network. Note that all network users must have full access rights and privileges (add/update/delete) to this shared folder.
  3. Install — Launch the RangerMSP setup file. You may do this from the server itself or from a client PC that has full access to the shared folder created in the previous step.

Follow the steps provided by the installation program.

RangerMSP server installation is now complete.

RangerMSP client has also been installed on the machine you ran the setup program from and it is ready for use.

Installation on Additional Client PCs

To install the RangerMSP client application on any other PC in your network, launch the RangerMSP client installation from:

\\<shared-server-folder>\RangerMSP\Utils\Install\InstallClient.exe

Please note

  • You need to install the full RangerMSP system just once—on the server (or dedicated PC). To install the system on the client PC, just follow the client application shortcut created during the initial installation.
  • Each Windows user who runs RangerMSP client should have all rights and privileges (add/update/delete) to the shared network folder. Without these privileges, the user will not be able to log in to the system or update information in the database.

Done! You can now start working with RangerMSP.

Stand-Alone Installation

This section provides information on how to install the RangerMSP server and client applications on a local PC for a single-user system. Where should the RangerMSP software be located when using RangerMSP as a stand-alone system? When using RangerMSP on a stand-alone PC, the server and client applications are both installed on your local PC. The client application is launched locally, using the server installation on this PC.

Server-side and Local Client Installation

The RangerMSP installation process is completed in a few simple steps:

  1. Download — Make sure you have downloaded the latest RangerMSP setup file from here.
  2. Install — Launch the downloaded RangerMSP Installer application.

Follow the instructions provided by the installation program:

Step 1: local server installation: In this step you should select the installation folder for the server-components installation. The installation program will then install the server files into this folder.

Step 2: local client installation: In this step you should select the client installation folder. The installation program will then install RangerMSP client into this folder.

Done! You can now start working with RangerMSP.

Troubleshooting

When running RangerMSP getting error message: "Error while running client: Cannot modify a read-only dataset"

Solution: This error may occur when trying to run the RangerMSP client application (usually for the first time), and it may indicate a Windows' privileges or permissions issue in accessing the RangerMSP installation folder.
Should a user receive this error message, make sure the user has full access rights to the RangerMSP installation folder on the server (or locally, if the system is installed in a stand-alone configuration). Without full access rights, the user will not be able to log in to the system or update information in the database.
A simple way to verify that a user has all the required permissions to the RangerMSP installation path (read/write/ delete) is to create a simple text file (e.g. "test.txt") under <Shared-Server-Folder>\RangerMSP\DBSys\ folder, using the same PC on which you are running the RangerMSP client application. The client should then attempt to edit the file's content with some text, save it, and then delete it. Once a client is able to perform this test successfully, they should be able to run RangerMSP without a problem.

When running RangerMSP getting error message: "Error while running client: Cannot load RangerMSP client due to Windows permissions error."

Solution: See previous solution above.
