Introduction
Installing CommitCRM is easy! The program can be placed on your server, allowing multiple users to access the program from separate PCs, OR it can be installed as a stand-alone application on a single PC.
Download
Make sure you have downloaded the latest CommitCRM setup file from the CommitCRM download page. Note that this file contains everything needed to install the main CommitCRM application and all CommitCRM modules.
Installation
Decide how you want to install CommitCRM: (Please choose only 1 method)
- Over a network with the CommitCRM Server and CommitCRM Clients on separate PCs.
- As a stand-alone system on a single PC.
Note: The installation file already includes all of CommitCRM's modules. In order to set up server-side modules such as the CommitCRM Web Interface, CommitCRM Email Connector, and CommitCRM Alerts Server refer to their manual.
Network Installation
This section provides information on how to install CommitCRM for network usage. Installation is short and simple, and you can be up and running in minutes.
Where should the CommitCRM software be located when using CommitCRM on the network?
CommitCRM should be installed in a shared folder on your server that is accessible to all users who work with the application. All client applications will be launched from this shared folder. There is no need to install the full CommitCRM system on each client PC.
Server-side Installation
The CommitCRM installation process is completed in a few simple steps:
- Download — Make sure you have downloaded the latest CommitCRM setup file from the CommitCRM download page.
- Create a shared folder — Create a shared folder on the server, or on any computer that acts as a server and can be accessed over the network. Note that all network users must have full access rights and privileges (add/update/delete) to this shared folder.
- Install — Launch the CommitCRM setup file. You may do this from the server itself or from a client PC that has full access to the shared folder created in the previous step.
Follow the steps provided by the installation program:
Step 1: server components installation: In this step you will be asked where to install the CommitCRM files. You should select the shared folder you have created for this purpose. The installation program will then install the server files into this folder.
Step 2: local client installation: The installation program will now create a shortcut from which to run the client application program. Click 'Next' to install the client application shortcut.
The server-side installation is now complete.
Installation on Additional Client PCs
To install the CommitCRM client application on any other PC in your network, launch the CommitCRM client installation from:
\\<shared-server-folder>\Commit\Utils\Install\InstallClient.exe
Please note
- You need to install the full CommitCRM system just once—on the server (or dedicated PC). To install the system on the client PC, just follow the client application shortcut created during the initial installation.
- Each Windows user who runs CommitCRM client should have all rights and privileges (add/update/delete) to the shared network folder. Without these privileges, the user will not be able to log in to the system or update information in the database.
Done! You can now start working with CommitCRM.
Stand-Alone Installation
This section provides information on how to install the CommitCRM server and client applications on a local PC for a single-user system. Where should the CommitCRM software be located when using CommitCRM as a stand-alone system? When using CommitCRM on a stand-alone PC, the server and client applications are both installed on your local PC. The client application is launched locally, using the server installation on this PC.
Server-side and Local Client Installation
The CommitCRM installation process is completed in a few simple steps:
- Download — Make sure you have downloaded the latest CommitCRM setup file from here.
- Install — Launch the downloaded CommitCRM Installer application.
Follow the instructions provided by the installation program:
Step 1: local server installation: In this step you should select the installation folder for the server-components installation. The installation program will then install the server files into this folder.
Step 2: local client installation: In this step you should select the client installation folder. The installation program will then install CommitCRM client into this folder.
Done! You can now start working with CommitCRM.
Troubleshooting
When running CommitCRM getting error message: "Error while running client: Cannot modify a read-only dataset"
Solution: This error may occur when trying to run the CommitCRM client application (usually for the first time), and it may indicate a Windows' privileges or permissions issue in accessing the CommitCRM installation folder.
Should a user receive this error message, make sure the user has full access rights to the CommitCRM installation folder on the server (or locally, if the system is installed in a stand-alone configuration). Without full access rights, the user will not be able to log in to the system or update information in the database.
A simple way to verify that a user has all the required permissions to the CommitCRM installation path (read/write/ delete) is to create a simple text file (e.g. "test.txt") under <Shared-Server-Folder>\Commit\DBSys\ folder, using the same PC on which you are running the CommitCRM client application. The client should then attempt to edit the file's content with some text, save it, and then delete it. Once a client is able to perform this test successfully, they should be able to run CommitCRM without a problem.
When running CommitCRM getting error message: "Error while running client: Cannot load CommitCRM client due to Windows permissions error."
